A Vacancy exists for a K9 Handler in the Aviation Division, based in Kempton Park and Cape Town.

The suitable candidate’s main responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

K9 Operations & Handling

  • Conduct routine patrols and security sweeps of aircraft, terminals, baggage areas, and cargo facilities using trained K9s.
  • Handle the dog according to established aviation and company protocols for detection of explosives, narcotics, or contraband.
  • Maintain strict control, discipline, and welfare of the K9 during all operations.
  • Assist aviation security personnel in screening passengers, cargo, and baggage when required.
  • Respond to alarms, threats, or suspicious activities in designated areas.
K9 Care & Maintenance
  • Ensure daily feeding, grooming, exercise, and health monitoring of the dog.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of kennels, transport cages, and operational equipment.
  • Report any signs of illness or injury to the unit supervisor and coordinate veterinary care.
  • Keep accurate logs of K9 performance, training, feeding, and health records.
Security & Compliance
  • Adhere to all Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) security regulations.
  • Follow all aviation security procedures related to access control, restricted areas, and cargo screening.
  • Participate in drills, audits, and inspections as part of the airport’s security compliance program.
Training & Development
  • Participate in regular refresher training and certification assessments for both handler and dog.
  • Maintain operational readiness and proficiency in K9 detection techniques.
  • Assist in training new handlers or K9s when assigned.
Reporting & Documentation
  • Complete daily operational and incident reports accurately and on time.
  • Record detection outcomes, patrol routes, and response activities.
  • Report all security breaches or anomalies to the Aviation Security Control Room or Supervisor immediate.

Preferred qualifications/attributes/skills:
  • Strong animal handling and communication skills.
  • High level of discipline, alertness, and situational awareness.
  • Excellent observation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond swiftly to threats.
  • Physical fitness and stamina.
  • Understanding of airport operations and aviation security procedures.
  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • PSIRA Grade C or higher (registered and valid).
  • Valid DH5 K9 Handler qualification (Explosive or Narcotic Detection) mandatory.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a K9 Handler, preferably in aviation or high-risk environments.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain airport security clearance and comply with all aviation regulatory requirements.
