Thompson Construction Group is currently seeking experienced Heavy Equipment Trainers to support our operations in the Fort McMurray region. These positions are responsible for training, evaluating, and developing heavy equipment operators to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company, client, and regulatory standards.

Reporting to the Site Superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Trainer plays a key role in maintaining operator competency, supporting site performance, and promoting a strong safety culture across all equipment operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on training and evaluation for operators across a variety of heavy equipment, including:
  • Hydraulic Shovels, Excavators, Dozers, Graders, Scrapers, Packers
  • Articulated Rock Trucks, Rigid Frame Haul Trucks, Water Trucks, Tractors, and other site equipment
  • Ensure operators are working in compliance with company policies, client requirements, and OH&S legislation
  • Deliver Thompson Construction Group’s operator training and competency programs on site
  • Complete operator competency assessments, evaluations, and performance reviews as required
  • Identify skill gaps and provide ongoing coaching and follow-up with operators
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date training records and documentation
  • Submit weekly training reports and updates to management
  • Coordinate and deliver mine drive training where applicable
  • Support Supervisors and Superintendents in meeting site training and competency requirements
  • Update and track crew designations as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a heavy equipment operator, including experience training or mentoring operators
  • Strong working knowledge of heavy civil and mining equipment operations
  • Experience delivering structured training programs and competency evaluations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to deliver training in both one-on-one and group settings
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 1 considered an asset)
  • CSO certification
  • Willingness to work a rotational schedule in Fort McMurray with camp accommodations
  • Ability to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing

Additional Information:

These are full-time, project-based, rotational positions located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Project scope and duration will vary based on operational requirements.
